Strengthening International Cooperation: Mutual Recognition Agreement Between the DAV and the CIA

In May 2025, the German Association of Actuaries (DAV) and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), governing the mutual recognition of their professional qualifications. With this step, both organizations are deepening their long-standing cooperation in an international context and sending a strong signal in favor of mobility and networking among actuaries across national borders. This article covers the details of the agreement from the DAV-Perspective.

The new agreement enables qualified members of both associations, under certain conditions, to gain simplified admission to the respective other organization. This opens up new perspectives in particular for individuals who are active internationally or who aspire to pursue professional activities in another country. In addition to Canada, the DAV already has an MRA in place with all European actuarial associations that are members of the Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE), as well as with the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

The foundation of the MRA is mutual trust in the high quality, integrity, and requirements of the education systems and professional standards of both associations. The bilateral agreement was carefully prepared and takes into account the respective requirements relating to education, professional practice, and professional ethics.

The DAV has been actively represented on international committees for many years, specifically within the AAE and the International Actuarial Association (IAA). The new MRA represents another milestone in international cooperation and underscores the DAV’s commitment to promoting cross-border mobility for its members and strengthening professional exchange at European and global levels.

Further information is available on the DAV’s website pages covering “The Actuarial Profession” and “Regulations of the Association”.
