VP & Actuary, Non-Traditional Valuation

Position Overview

The VP & Actuary will be a leader within a high performing group that performs financial reporting and analysis for a wide range of US and International products underlying RGA's Non-Traditional reinsurance treaties. This position will be accountable for the EMEA non-traditional business which is predominantly Longevity Reinsurance, Asset Intensive Longevity, and Payout Annuities. This position will also provide support for new business opportunities, including opportunities to expand beyond longevity as the primary risk reinsured.

While the focus is on US GAAP reporting and planning, the role also includes production and analysis of other important metrics, including US Statutory reserves, Tax, Solvency II, ORSA, Cash Flow Testing, Economic Capital, Embedded Value, and the Financial Plan.

Communication with key executives at RGA along with maintaining excellent relationships with Finance, Business Partner, and Corporate Risk Management teams are components of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the reporting of US GAAP, Statutory and Tax valuation for EMEA non-traditional business. Ensures these items are appropriately documented and posted within a controlled environment.
  • Is accountable for explaining the changes in actuarial balances including major drivers of variances and any approaches and controls used to produce, monitor, and communicate the results.
  • Directs financial planning and analysis activities, communicates the appropriate financial analytics, and reviews the results for reasonableness and alignment with strategic directives.
  • Provides oversight and direction to actuarial/financial associates in the department. Performs supervisory duties including, but not limited to, managing a team, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development.
  • Serves as a liaison with other lines of business and company functions/departments to provide subject matter expertise or promote improvement in valuation, financial analysis, inforce management, pricing, and other business activities for the non-traditional EMEA business.
  • Has a broad and comprehensive understanding of upcoming industry-wide changes and liaises with stakeholders to reflect these as regulatory environments continues to evolve.
  • Possesses awareness of most areas of life, health, annuity, and longevity reinsurance valuation and uses knowledge to direct implementing processes. Can apply knowledge to complex business problems to support assigned business and strategic initiatives.
  • Strong ability to negotiate and communicate across departments including IT, country- and product-specific valuation teams, global Finance, corporate modeling, global RD&A, and others.
  • Drive for standardization of reporting processes globally including but not limited to: PBI, PLAN, CFT, PBR, end-user reporting and management reporting.



Requirements

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Finance, Actuarial Sciences, Computer Science, Statistics or related field
  • FSA accreditation or equivalent
  • 10+ years of actuarial experience in life insurance/reinsurance
  • Prior management experience


Preferred:

  • MAAA accreditation
  • CFA, PRMIA PRM, GARP FRM, or other such financial risk management designation
  • Stochastic modeling and/or asset liability management experience
  • Familiarity with traditional life, LTC, deferred annuities, including fixed, equity-indexed and/or variable annuities, pensions, and other longevity products
  • Familiarity with fixed income investments, understanding of asset modeling techniques and capital markets
  • Familiarity with most Prophet Libraries including Asset Liability Strategy (ALS), US Life and Annuity 360 and US GAAP Cohort Library
  • Expert knowledge of local regulatory environments
  • Reinsurance industry and/or merger and acquisition experience


Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Highly advanced PC and technical skills, including database applications (Access, Oracle, SQL, or equivalent technology), spreadsheets, statistical programs, and actuarial software (MoSes, TAS, AXIS, Prophet, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge in modeling various insurance products and reinsurance structures
  • Highly advanced ability to translate business needs and problems into viable/accepted solutions
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced ability in implementing change within an organization, ensuring understanding, participation, and ownership
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively with different disciplines, including pricing, investments, accounting, systems, and administration
  • Advanced project management skills, demonstrating an ability to evaluate project
    objectives and scope for feasibility and understanding
  • Highly advanced oral and written communication skills including presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey information in a way that is meaningful and well received by stakeholders and team members
  • Proven track record of persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers
  • Expert knowledge of life insurance, longevity, institutional and/or annuity products
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP, Statutory, and Tax valuation and financial reporting
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and/or teams simultaneously
  • Ability to liaise with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional, and technical disciplines
  • Ability to balance detail with departmental goals/objectives
  • Ability to work independently and to work well within a team environment and participate in department projects

The general pay range for this position is $153,730 to $234,465 per year. Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement and other employee benefits.
